The Pull and Pollution of Porn

This month’s blog is written by Dale Cupo, an educator and advocate at FREE.  We are talking about pornography in this blog because we know pornography can be a real struggle and even an addiction for many in our society today.  We also know pornography fuels the demand for sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.  Dale wrote a poem called The Pull and Pollution of Porn, and she also gives us some staggering statistics on pornography. If you or someone you know is struggling with pornography, click on the links below for more information, and reach out for help.  It doesn’t have to remain hidden.  Bring it into the Light!

The Pull and Pollution of Porn
Encircling Snare
By Dale Cupo

In naivety opening a dangerous can,
Leading down a treacherous path,
Innocent curiosity
Turning into a monstrosity.
Losing site of the garden intent,
Man and woman with God ever present,
In His image designed.
Sin and Satan now leading the mind,
Creating unhealthy desires,
Dragging both parties into the mire.
Women now objectified,
Men believing the lie,
“Images better than flesh”
“Woman are just objects.”
Serpent gripping our kinsmen,
Encircling in snare,
Blinding from needed warfare.
Complacent accomplices,
Leaving behind broken promises.
True Identity lost,
Feeding the addiction at all cost,
Creating turmoil and strife.

Jesus who in death conquered life,
Died for the bound as well as the broken.
Captives to be made free simply by His name spoken.
Oh Jesus emancipate those who have been ensnared.
Open their eyes to their sisters, help them to care.
Break these strongholds we ask in your Name,
This also the reason you came,
Not just for victim,
But for perpetrator too!
Death and resurrection
Ample in power for restitution.

As a mom of both boys and a girl my list of things to worry about is long.  I tend to especially worry about my daughter driving to strange places by herself, being vulnerable to sexual assaults and the like, but the reality today is that our boys are just as vulnerable only in a different way.  The pull of pornography is a real threat to even our “good boy’s.” With just one click they can be exposed even if we have our homes “locked down” from smut.  From the locker room to a simple snap chat the door for this treacherous path can be opened.  The truly scary part is that the consequences are steep.  Our youth are being desensitized by the push and pull of pornography.
Many reports are coming out about the addictive qualities pornography has on the brain and unfortunately the easy access to it is like just trying “heroin,” once it has been viewed the draw to return can be overwhelming.  “Statistics show that the adult entertainment industry has grown from about 3.9 million dollars in 2001 to almost 13 billion dollars in the United States.” (Richtel, 2007.)  It is difficult to prove that there is a direct cause and affect between pornography and sex trafficking, however more and more studies are suggesting the link between pornography and the dehumanizing of women and children. One study by Oddone-Paolucci et al. “Suggests increased exposure is significantly correlated with behavioral aggression, trivialization of rape, greater acceptance of rape myths, and a decrease in empathy and compassion towards victims of sexual assault.”  Researchers Carr & VanDeusen also noted “That men who view pornographic magazines, websites, and videos or go to strip clubs are more likely to commit sexual violence than those who do not.”
This has a grip not only on the women who are being exploited by those who manufacture pornographic material, but also on our young men.  We need to not only cry out for the victims of human trafficking, but cry out about the pollution of pornography that helps feed this vicious cycle.  We need to provide safe places for the women being used and safe places men can get the real help they need to break the grip of addiction.  We must guard our hearts, minds and yes, even our eyes, against this insidious industry.
